·NO previous musical experience [or even talent!] is necessary! (Simply arrive a rank beginner and, by the end of 90-minutes, be a BONA FIDE steel drummer in a steel drum band!)

“Steel Band Experience!”

Class instructor is Mary Spalding who, after receiving an M.A. in World Music from Wesleyan University, went on to study and perform steel pan (steel drum) in Trinidad--the birthplace of the steel pan--for various Panorama competitions and Carnival activities. Mary is also the founder and band leader of Steel Jam (www.steeljam.com) --a Caribbean steel drum band that performs for corporate events, private parties, weddings, fundraisers, community events and festivals.

Phil Hawkins prepares to release new CD

On Friday, April 17 the
Phil Hawkins Group will be performing at Theatre on San Pedro Square (29 N. San Pedro St, San Jose). Please come and be a member of our audience as we film and record this concert for our DVD.

We'll be performing music from the upcoming CD "Sugarcane Suite" and featuring the great talents of:
Bob Crawford - keys
Ray Obiedo - guitar
Michelle Hawkins - vocals
Marc van Wageningen - bass
Paul van Wageningen - drums
Phil Hawkins - steelpans, percussion

The room will hold about 150 people and we'd really like to fill it up with a supportive/appreciative crowd. So please pass this along to anyone who might be interested in being a part of the filming/recording.

Tickets may be purchased at the door for $10
Doors open at 7:30pm and the show starts at 8:00pm
with a special opening performance by the West Valley Jazz Department.
