Our Boys USA reunion celebration was a blast!

PanMan Leroi Boldon celebrates 75th
Bay Area veteran PanMan Leroi Boldon reached a milestone Monday in celebrating his 75th birthday. A small group of family and friends gathered at Leroi's home in San Jose to celebrate the occasion. Leroi has played with the SF Panhandlers and with Our Boys USA. He has also written tunes for Crazy and Jeff Narell. Leroi says he is looking forward to writing some new music for pan in the coming months. Bon fete Leroi!

Our Boys Carnival Masquerade Fete Friday!
Went to a short rehearsal today with Our Boys and friends and...the band is smokin'. Veteran pan players like Sharon Baird, David Reid, Terry Kinsale Figuera, Kenrick Wharff, Liz La Mantia, Dexter Bruce and Jim Munzenrider of the SF Panhandlers were working up a hot set for Friday night at Ashkenaz. 'Panhandlers' is de ting...
Great show last night put on by the SF Panhandlers at their new CD release concert entitled “Pan is de ting”. The house was sold out, and the band was phenomenal. After singing one of his original tunes with the band 11-time Grammy Award winner Tony Lindsay remarked: “I should re-record this tune with this band.” I don’t think the Panhandlers and their Youth Brigade are conscious of just how good they are; and the fact that the band’s director Jim Munzenrider is approaching legend status with his latest production. In fact, let’s just dub him Jim “The Legend” Munzenrider.
Personally, I had a whale of a time sitting in on a couple of tunes including ‘three’ offerings of ‘Pan is de ting’, backed up by a 9-year-old vocalist named Maddie who matched me word for word with the lyrics. Then she broke off and took a pan solo before returning for the last verse. Amazing pipes. This kid might be the future of calypso.
The amazing Michael Spiro supervised a tight engine room with Mat Germano on drums and the dreadlocked Newton Martin on Iron.
All in all, this show was a blast. I think I heard Jim mention an upcoming concert with Robert Greenidge in December. I ain’ missin’ dat.

Panhandlers CD release concert April 1
The SF Panhandlers will release their 5th CD at a concert Friday April 1, 7:30pm at the College of San Mateo, 1700 W. Hillsdale Bl. in San Mateo. The title of the CD is 'Pan is de ting' from the tune by the same name written by Harry Best and arranged by Tom Miller. The CD was produced by Jim Munzenrider. The CD features Tony Lindsay, lead singer with Santana; International percussionsist Mike Spiro; the Contra Costa Children's Chorus; and saxaphonist Danny Bittker. Tracks include:

Beginning and Intermediate Classes in Session in San Rafael

Don’t miss the CSM Pandlers steelpan CD release concert April 1. The Panhandlers have been the premier steelpan program in the Bay Area for more than 20 years. They are internationally acclaimed. If you have never seen or heard a full steelpan orchestra of more than 20 people you will totally enjoy this performance. The title of the CD is taken from a tune I wrote for the Trinidad And Tobago Carnival entitled ‘Pan is deT’ing’. The Panhandlers recorded the tune for their new CD.

Steelpan for sale
I have one previously owned lead steelpan for sale. It is in excellent condition and well tuned. It’s a Low C tenor voice in the Circle of Fifths pattern and powder-coated in silver. It was a Christmas gift for a young boy who preferred to play guitar. Hardly played on. Comes with free mallets and instruction book. Total package is $800 (plus tax). First come First Served! Pan Around the Bay
Caught a little lime with Jim Munzenrider, Tom Miller and some the beaters from the Panhandlers. The group was working on recording some tunes at Expressions College in Emeryville...sounding real nice. Great atmosphere in the booth.
Rumour is that Panman Anthony 'Cannon' Hernandez formerly of Our Boys may be moving his Caribbean Rhythms show out of the Bay Area and heading to Pennsylvania. Cannon is a regular on the Bay Area pan scene. He also teaches several classes in the east bay. He will be missed especially at the East Bay Center for performing arts in Richmond where he has taught pan for almost 10 years.
Steelpan classes Bay Area
Steelpan classes are being taught all over the Bay Area this spring and summer. Caribbean Steelpan Msic Center potluck party
Efforts are underway to launch the East Bay Steel Orchestra that will anchor the planned Caribbean Steelpan Music Center. A potluck pan party is planned for May 23 in Moraga to stimulate interest in the project. There will be some pan jammin' and a special Pan Guest, so stay tuned. Check for more info here:
Bay Area Pan Scene coming alive
The pan scene is coming alive in the Bay Area as spring sets in. If you missed it, there was wild pan jam in Oakland March 28 in celebration of drummer Tony D's birthday. Tony, a Trini who is no stranger to pan occasionally hosts these panjams especially when tuner Leroy 'Ali' Williams is in town. Pan players present were Paul Snagg, Asheba, Olison Batiste, Terry Figueroa, Mark Rosenthal, Liz LaMantia, yours truly and a host of other musicians. The party went late into the night.
Another pan related gathering took place at Ashkenaz April 2 when Caribbean Allstars resurfaced with the return from Trinidad of leader Hugh 'Sweetfoot' Maynard. The foot was chillin' in T&T for Carnival. Paul Snagg delivered some impressive licks on double seconds that revealed how much he had been shedding over the winter. Pan Exstasy led by panman Ashton Craig played the opening set.
Stop the Noise!
Do you teach pan to kids at a school or community program? Having problems trying to get them to play softly. Most kids are just bangers. Here's a trick I used to considerably reduce the noise: Shorten the sticks!
For lead/tenors, no more than 7"; Double Seconds, 8"; Guitar/Cellos, 9"; and bass 12".

The Pan Ramajay Summer Steel Drum Festival, located at the Lamont School of Music on the campus of the University of Denver, CO, is a six day workshop for steel pan players of all ages, backgrounds and levels.
An all-star faculty along with the festival participants join together for a combination of workshops, rehearsals, student performances, faculty concerts and even late night jams. Daily seminars and rehearsals are designed to assist participants with practice and playing techniques, arranging techniques, improvisation approaches, ensemble organization, instruction and administration, and more.

On Friday, April 17 the
Phil Hawkins Group will be performing at Theatre on San Pedro Square (29 N. San Pedro St, San Jose). Please come and be a member of our audience as we film and record this concert for our DVD.

Nor Cal Welcomes Joe Perea
Joe Perea former Director of Instrumental Music at Richland College, where he directed the steel band ensembles, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and the Jazz Ensemble has reportedly moved to Santa Rosa Junior College in Northern California.
Joe was the founder of The Richland College Steel Band, the premier community college steel band program in the DFW metroplex. All their steel pan instruments were built and tuned in-house Joe with assistance by members of the group.
Together with the Richland Music Club, they host the annual Carnival of Steel music festival every April on the Richland College campus. With over 1000 attendees, the Carnival of Steel brings together elementary, high school, college, and professional steel bands from all over Texas and beyond for a daylong event of performances, cultural activities, and educational presentations.
He holds degrees from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and the University of North Texas. As a steel pannist, he has performed with Phase II Pan Groove, as well as with many of the top steel pan artists including Ken "Professor" Philmore, Len "Boogsie" Sharpe, Tom Miller, Ray Holman, Andy Narell, and Robert Greenidge.
He has developed his skills in the craft of pan building and tuning through the guidance of people including Ellie Mannette, Alan Coyle, Tony Slater, Wallace Austin, Darren Dyke, Phil Solomon, and many others.
He served as Program Coordinator for the Over-the-Rhine Steel Drum Band in Cincinnati, OH and later toured with the University of North Texas Steel Band. He started the steel band program at North Garland High School in Garland, TX and has consulted with numerous school and community-based steel band programs around the US on grant writing and curriculum development.
